These special Spirit reins move much easier through the rings as compared to similar bridles that use the flat reins which are cheaper to produce - the rolled reins are very expensive and time consuming to make - the rolled reins make a major difference in how your horse responds. If you look at other bitless style bridles you will find they all use the cheaper flat reins which cause much more friction when moving back and forth through the bridle rings which causes reduced communication between horse and rider. 1. What is the difference between your bridle and Dr. Cook’s Bitless Bride and other copy cat bitless bridles with the under the jaw technology? The design used by Dr. Cook is my original design of 1988 and has operating flaws. The current design of Spirit Bridle is the more efficient design originating from my first design.
2. Does Spirit Bridle cause any pain or discomfort? No, the Spirit Bridle is designed so as not to inflict pain or discomfort to the horse in any manner, at any location. The wide poll strap and round rein sections are just two of the reasons for the humane application of Spirit Bridle.
3. Does Spirit Bridle cause damage to the nerves on the jaw or any other location? No, the Spirit Bridle causes no damage or injury of any kind to any nerves. It is designed to release pressure rather than continuously apply pressure.
4. Does Spirit Bridle work like other bridles for steering? Yes, the Spirit Bridle is used directionally the same as conventional bridles. Spirit Bridle allows the horse to be soft and supple in the neck and back, so the horse will turn tighter and more vertical.
5. Does Spirit Bridle have stopping capability? Yes, the Spirit Bridle stops a horse. It is so efficient that it is recognized for horse racing. To stop a horse who is trying to run off, the rider needs only to shake the head and then hold. Usually it takes only two or three such actions to stop the horse. With Spirit Bridle, the rider is actually braking the horse from the hindquarter.
6. Can the Spirit Bridle create soft, supple lateral movements? Yes, the Spirit Bridle creates lateral movements that are soft and supple and with a longer stride when needed. This is a result of the hindquarters being engaged and the back being up.
7. Can the Spirit Bridle aid the rider in obtaining “collection” in the horse? Most assuredly. In fact, the Spirit Bridle “allows” the horse to correctly collect because the horse is coming under the rider in complete softness and suppleness.
8. What types of riding can Spirit Bridle be used? In non-competitive events where there are equipment requirements, Spirit Bridle should be used all of the time for the physical well being of the horse.
9. What are the physical benefits to the horse who uses Spirit Bridle? First and foremost, the horse is allowed to breath naturally, receiving as much air as possible when necessary. Second, the neck muscles are allowed to become soft and supple which allows the shoulders to reach farther out. Third, the back is allowed to be up in its natural position which alleviates back pain. Fourth, the hindquarters are allowed to function as designed which lengthens the stride. All of these attributes create a softer ride for the rider and a horse with greater performance through greater freedom.
10. Why are there differences in the models of Spirit Bridle? The differences are strictly image differences. The operating technology is exactly the same. The endurance version is based upon the design requirements asked for by the riders. The dressage/show version is designed to be thinner and refined in image. The western version is designed to add strength for usage where riders feel that they require it.
11. Has Spirit Bridle be approved for competition by any equine sanctioning body? Yes In 2002, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission authorized its use in thoroughbred horse racing. In the summer of 2002, the head of the Rules for the American Quarter Horse Association authorized its use under the abuse rule.
Bridling Instructions
1. Release the cavesson/noseband to place Spirit Bridle on your horse, buckle snugly to fit the horse with one finger between jawbone and chin strap. Noseband should not rotate.
2. Adjust the two upper side cheek piece buckles vertically to set noseband at 1 ½ -2” back from the corner of the mouth.
3. Adjust the rein length buckle for your preferred length. The rider’s hands should hold the rubber rein grips.
4. Use of the“yoke” is required as your horse learns self-carriage in Spirit Bridle. A. The yoke should be laid against the neck to set the length from the chest strap so the highest point of the rings is 6-7” below the throat latch. B. The neck strap encircles the neck and is attached to the girth, with the yoke attaching to the ring. C. The chest strap is the adjustment point for the length of the yoke. Achieving the “Perfect Ride” 1. Spirit Bridle requires light to medium continuous contact with the hands low at the withers. Your hands should be placed so your fingers are just above the withers with the hands at a 45 degree angle, thumbs inward. From your elbow to the bridle should be an easy, straight line with relaxed shoulders and arms. 2. The poll (area immediately behind the ears) should be the highest point on your horse. To obtain this position, the rider’s hands should momentarily rise vertically only, not backward. 3. To achieve vertical position of the horse, balance the horse on the straight line, and shift to the outside shoulder on the curve, tighten the outside rein lightly, as you continue directional contact with the inside rein. Use the inside calf muscles against the side of the horse and tighten your outside buttock muscles. 4. To break any resistance cycle of the horse, or to stop, shake the reins for a moment, then hold with pressure for a moment, then release and resume movement. Repeating this action may be required to get the horse’s attention…use a little more emphasis and pressure with any additional repetition…repetition is normally required only in initial training.
